In our counsellor's corner . . . Gloria Knutson!

Gloria Knutson serves as our school counselor.  She brings a wealth of experience and expertise ranging from providing counseling services as requested by students, staff or families.  Sometimes a child needs a safe place to talk, work through a complex issue through art or play or journey through the restorative justice process to resolve conflict peacefully.

A strong foundation of emotional literacy and perspective taking is created in part through our Roots of Empathy Program.  As a Roots of Empathy instructor, Gloria is part of the team of instructors building caring, peaceful and civil societies through the development of empathy in children.

Another important role of the school counselor at Muriel Martin is to coordinate services for students with special needs.  This includes but is not limited to the following:  psycho educational assessment as recommended by the learning team, coordination of Individual Program Plans (IPP) for students, coordination of Success in School plans for students in care, request consultants as needed for students with severe special needs.

Gloria also serves as the reading specialist for the English program.  Working collaboratively with child’s learning team, she is able to identify students that require supports in reading acquisition in a fun and engaging way so that students love attending “reading club!”

With an undergraduate degree in liberal arts from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from the University of Alberta, Gloria is well equipped to meet your child’s unique learning needs.  Gloria is available at the school three to four days a week.  Parents can either make an appointment through phoning the school or emailing her directly at Gloria.Knutson@spschools.org
