Les Kirchner serves as the principal at Muriel Martin School - the home of the Dinos! He brings a wealth of experience and expertise in the area of school leadership in St. Albert Public Schools. He has been principal in two schools and loves working with students and staff. Throughout his successful career, he has had the opportunity to effectively lead change, create caring, respectful and genuine connections in learning cultures, and effectively guide and impact staff capacity building at school, district and provincial levels.
As an experienced leader, his understanding in developing a clear mission, vision and values continues to stimulate academic growth and create a cohesive culture at Muriel Martin School . Leading multiple school teams has equipped him with the competencies needed to explore innovations, take risks and develop meaningful relationships with the school community. With Les’ work as a leader in different school cultures and multiple school, district and provincial committees, he has the vital attributes necessary to sustain and develop dynamic and positive relationships.. As a leader, creating trusting and engaging relationships has been a priority for Les. He is fondly known as Mr K. by many students throughout the district.
Les believes caring and passionate staff help drive student learning and school improvement. This happens when there are high expectations and staff have the opportunities to develop their professional portfolio through mentorship, quality professional development and research based practices. He encourages teachers and support staff to seek opportunities to lead their peers in a variety of curricular areas as this has been critical in developing high performance standards. Les’ work with school leaders has impacted teacher efficacy, enhanced student results, and has developed cultures of continuous learning.
Les has an undergraduate degree in secondary education from the University of Alberta and a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Alabama. With 30 years experience as a teacher and administrator, Les has worked in elementary, junior high, high school and adult learning settings. He has also been part of three overseas’ experiences- having taught in Taiwan, Guyana and Ecuador. Les is a dedicated and passionate leader who embraces change, values and cultivates authentic relationships and models the importance of lifelong learning. He enjoys seeing students and staff thrive in safe and caring culture.
